The David Keddie Cup – Finals

Held in memory of David, who was a keen player and friend to us all. The final round was held in Holmfirth tonight, near the anniversary of his Birthday. David was a lovely guy, superb player and friend to us all.

The event commenced with a thank you from Louise for coming together in David’s memory and some anecdotes from myself. Recalling the time David had seconds left on the clock vs Peter Shaw, pushing for a win in a drawn position before losing on time (with his Captain – me – having kittens watching). I implored players to play in this spirit and attack. I was not disappointed.

So, the matches.

Meltham & Denby Dale (MaDD) were clear favorites to win and ahead on points. It was still very close though. MaDD had mauled Holmfirth in the first round before tying with Honley. Holmfirth went on to beat Huddersfield in what turned out to be crucial to the board count. Huddersfield then went to tie with Honley 1-1.

We were all taking points off each other.

In the first set of matches Holmfirth tied with Honley, with blunders abound on both sides. Dan under time pressure lost a bishop and fell. Lewis was well up against Brynn but lost on time. Meanwhile Drew and Gerald were making hay against Alec and Hamid.

Over the other side of the room, the miracle happened. 3.5 to 2.5 to Huddersfield, with Dave Kilmartin doing something of a swindle in time scramble (completely in the spirit of what was said at the start).

Suddenly all four teams could take the Keddie Cup.

Holmfirth responded magnificently, beating Honley 4.5 to 1.5, achieving the board count should MaDD draw with Huddersfield. There were convincing wins from Lewis, Drew and Dave. Geralds game was completely mental and reminiscent of David’s style of play.

Huddersfield has the bit between their teeth however, with a fine win from Pavan and then David sealing the competition.

A quick tally and Holmfirth were to surprise winners with 7 points. All the other teams finished in second place on 6.

Yet again a fantastic competition, with Holmfirth sealing the Trophy for the third year running. I have particularly enjoyed how the strong standard play players have been repeatedly humbled (myself included).
