The John Newsome Cup

This is a new competition within the Huddersfield League, launched in memory of the great John Newsome. A gentleman I had the privilege to know as a junior facing his Netherton teams and an adult, in his later years. The idea of Tony Gilpin, the competition is split into two sections covering u1200 and 1200-1500 graded players. It put something into the league that has been missing and that is a competition for juniors and low rated players to compete fairly.

Funding was obtained from the ECF grassroot initiative to run the competition and purchase trophies

36 players are competing across both sections over 6 rounds, that also includes 8 from our own Holmfirth. Joint top on 2/2 is presently Jacob Westmoreland in the 1200-1500 section. It has been a fun event so far, with u18s and adults mixing well and some truly wild games.

Round Two starts, with heads down and a lot of hands on faces.

The competition is an excellent staging ground into league play and a fantastic opportunity for players to learn standard play in a friendly environment. For the u1200 in particular, organisers can try to teach them to SLOW DOWN and the age old SIT ON YOUR HANDS.

Well done to Rob and all the organisers for sorting and hosting this.
