Perfect score for Huddersfield chess team

Congratulations to Huddersfield in securing promotion to the Woodhouse Cup in the Yorkshire League. At Holmfirth we have close and historic ties with Huddersfield and although they soundly beat us this season, we wish them all the best in Division 1. Pending AGM votes we may be joining forces from September to take on the rest of Yorkshire!

Write up from Captain Leo Keely below.

Huddersfield chess team have won the Yorkshire league 2nd division title (The I.M. Brown Shield) with 9 wins from 9 matches and will be promoted to the 1st division (Woodhouse Cup) for next season.

The triumph represents the massive growth of chess in the Huddersfield area with thriving clubs in Holmfirth, Meltham and Denby Dale, Huddersfield and Huddersfield library being especially active incorporating training, new competitions and many other local events.

Next season in an attempt to compete in the top division Huddersfield and Holmfirth are very likely going to join together to form 3 teams across the 2 clubs.

Huddersfield’s success was based on a stable squad with good results all the way down the team and a strong sense of teamwork.  The scene is set for a bright future for all involved as well as more fantastic events put on by great local organisers.

New players of all levels are always welcome at all of the local clubs and there has never been a better time to play chess in Kirklees.  Information about all the local clubs is available online and the opportunity to play competitively is open to all.
