The Bill Lumley Trophy – Match Report

It is so good to have this back in play, especially as Bill was my coach/captain at East Bierley when I first started playing chess around the age of 11. I have let him know the competition is running again.

The competition is handicapped, which makes the team balance very interesting. As we have two juniors, who are frankly thrashing all comers, I put in a full junior team for Holmfirth A. The B, with myself on top board, has a few ‘old timers’ in – excluding Rogan and Harley.

The mix gave us a great advantage against Huddersfield, who stacked with pro’s, went into the matches against both out teams with a 4 point disadvantage.  Wins from Dave Booth, Alex and Isaac ensured victory.

Meltham, however, due to grading had a half point start. Isaac, Alex, Jacob and Harley took the win for the A team, whilst myself, Dave and Dan got the points for the B’s. A note for Tom who agonisingly fell from a winning position due to time trouble.

Holmfirth B narrowly beat Holmfirth A with wins from Steve, Dan and Rogan. Alex and Harley got the points for the A team.

In summary we had an excellent balance and with Dave, Alex and Isaac taking full points both teams are top of the league. Next round on the 17th April, where we face the powerful Honley team and Belgrave.
